All You Need to Know Hepatitis

What is Hepatitis?

“Hepat” means liver and “itis” means swelling. Hence, it’s the swelling of the liver. In India, hepatitis A and E are transferred due to infected water or food. Basically, these infections are self-restricting but can lead to life-threatening infections in certain cases.

Hepatitis B and C are transferred in different manners. When an already infected person gives birth to a child, the possibilities of transmission are very high, this mode of transmission is known as vertical transmission. Also, by means of unprotected intercourse, infected syringes, and infected blood products can also cause viral spread from one person to another which is termed horizontal transmission.

As per the estimates, in India, about 40 million people are chronically infected with hepatitis B and 6 -12 million people are chronically infected by hepatitis C.

On the contrary, hepatitis A and E lead to illness for a short duration. During the absence of pre-existing liver disease, the infection gets cleared devoid of causing permanent damage.
